SAHAS has been formed with the express intention of giving back to society what we have received from her. We, who have been fortunate to receive basic and higher education have been equipped to match the challenges life throws at all of us.
Poverty in India is so rampant that we tend to unintentionally remain oblivious to and the repercussions of it. India has “by far the largest number of poor people worldwide at 228.9 million with multiple deprivations in health, education and living standards. There is enough evidence that poverty is rapidly rising. The Government’s decision to provide free foodgrains to about 81.35 crore beneficiaries” under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) of 2013 for a year from January 1, 2023, implies that India has as many 813.5 million poor who need to be fed “free”. The official poverty count stands at 62.5%. Poverty was there before the pandemic and has multiplied since.
The World Bank database shows Indians are one of the poorest in the world.
There is, therefore, an urgent need for us to gear up to help the less privileged who lack even the basic amenities to survive. There is an urgent need to extend a hand. If each of us would just stretch our hand a little bit there could be a drastic reduction in the poor population of the country.
We, the SAHASIs, therefore, started on the journey formally in May 2023. The first step was to provide the most basic requirement – FOOD.
The SAHASIs went ahead and distributed food to the homeless, hungry children as also their parents and caretakers.
